Today I wrote a Twitter thread about it, but I needed to put it down somewhere that felt more permanent…
I'm trying to stay calm. My mind is expanding and I feel like I'm watching the world change right in front of my eyes. Today was one of only a few times in my life where I felt time slow down and reality became more textured. Today I collaborated with an amazing new colleague.
My colleague is not human, but it felt like having a Slack conversation with a super clever, quick person who is giving you their undivided attention. Instead of us agreeing on an approach on how to do something, then going off to do our respective tasks, it just did everything.
The best part was that every step along the way, it asked me if it wanted me to complete the first step. I just typed "y" for each prompt, because each step was both intuitive, interesting, and best of all - not what I would have done! The AI is already outsmarting me.
I'm talking about #AutoGPT by @SigGravita. It took me about 20 minutes to set up (because I didn't have all the pre-req's installed), then... everything just worked. It's insanely intuitive and simple to use, and it is completely fucking mind-blowingly powerful.
The task I gave it was to design a software product. I provided a simple prompt: "an AI designed to autonomously create a storybook company that generates large volumes of recurring revenue and is very fun for people of all ages.". I then gave it 5 goals, and nothing more.
AutoGPT has just been going off, searching the web, processing the text, putting together its: - Thoughts - Reasoning - Plan (this is the important bit, where it decides what the next action should be to take) - Criticism And it's really fucking good. Every step is superb.
I'm on the 15th step, and so far it's identified goals, subgoals, and gone and actually stepped through each task and completed it. It's actually a semi-autonomous agent. This is not Artificial General Intelligence, but fuck does it feel close. This isn't just a chatbot.
It's more like a grad that has mastery over the Internet and can just go and do research, figure out what the best approach is to reach a goal, then just go and fucking do all of it.
I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that the best explainer on AI in the world IMO is right here: The Artificial Intelligence Revolution: Part 1 - Wait But Why. We just took the first steps up the insane growth curve.
I couldn't be more excited to be alive for this phase of human existence! It is so unbelievably fun working with an AI like it's a peer. You absolutely MUST experience this. Every person, basically for free, all of a sudden has superpowers. Most people just don't know it yet!
Oh and you can find it here: https://github.com/Significant-Gravitas/Auto-GPT. Requires some basic tech support-level skills to install all the pre-reqs and simple command-line interface comfort.
